Little Krystal battles LeukaemiaBY MITCH CRAWLEY 13 Dec, 2011
Johnno's makes a wish come trueCHRISTMAS has come early for a Fraser Coast family who has had to spend much of the past few years inside hospitals. Bruce and Kay Nixon had their lives turned upside down in 2008 when their daughter was diagnosed with leukaemia. Only 14 months old at the time, Krystal has battled bravely and, for the moment at least, is winning. Yesterday, the family received some other good news courtesy of Make a Wish foundation and Johnno's Camper Trailers. The Make a Wish foundation grants a wish to children with life‑threatening medical conditions through donations. As part of a Christmas wish from Krystal and the family, a new camper valued at almost $20,000 was delivered to their Hervey Bay home. Owner of Johnno's Camper Trailers Craig McGown said the family deserved a break after everything they had been through and he was happy to help. An emotional Kay said the gift would make a world of difference to their lives after the many years spent struggling. “I just can't thank everyone enough," she said. 'We are lucky to still have Krystal and we've been through a lot but there are other families that go through much more." "We will spend this Christmas taking a much‑needed holiday and we plan to go to NSW to see some of our family.”
Wishes do come true26 Oct, 2011 10:08 AM
![]() Jye Corner of Moorland was diagnosed with Burkitt’s Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system, in 2009. He and his carer Ruth were on a train when she noticed how yellow the whites of his eyes appeared to be. Within days he was admitted to Westmead Children’s Hospital, where he spent the next four months.
Like many 18 year olds, Jye is currently sitting his HSC exams at Chatham High School, despite missing most of Year 10. He seems less stressed than most HSC students. He has faced bigger tests in his time. Last Thursday he took time out to keep an important appointment. Make-A-Wish Australia had organised for his wish to come true, thanks to Johnno’s Camper Trailers. Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. The organisation was founded in Australia in 1985 and since granted almost 7,000 wishes to Australian children. The entire Wish process provides a welcome diversion for children undergoing difficult medical treatments. It can also be a positive experience for families in challenging times. Jye has had a pretty tough time throughout his life. He says the time he spent in isolation while undergoing chemotherapy was particularly difficult. Now he is becoming an adult, he wished for a way to create his own personal space. He also craved the freedom to be able to get away and do some independent travel. A camper trailer seemed a perfect fit. Make-A-Wish Australia tracked down Dane Alling from Johnno’s Camper Trailers in Wauchope who agreed to help. Dane then sought the assistance of Craig McGown, Johnno’s Operations and Business Development Manager to make it all happen. Last week Dane and Craig proudly delivered the camper trailer to Jye’s Moorland home. It is from their ‘Off-Road Premier’ range and is valued at $12,500. Naturally Jye was thrilled to receive such a generous gift, as was his carer Ruth. When asked what motivated his wish choice, Jye revealed that in part he wanted to pay tribute to his friend and fellow Westmead patient Liyan, who had died. As someone who has regained their health after such a battle, Jye is keen not to miss the opportunity to ‘seize the day’. Ruth first came into contact with the Make-A-Wish organisation at Westmead Children’s Hospital. “The network of support services there was amazing,” she said. “Organisations like Make-A-Wish, Canteen and the Starlight Foundation all helped to make his treatment more bearable.” According to Craig McGown he and his colleagues could see that this request would have a significant impact for Jye, so they agreed to help the Make-A-Wish team. “Our business is doing well, so we felt it we should give something back,” Craig said. “Jye has worked so hard to get well and finish his schooling, so we are happy to reward his efforts. Besides, good things happen to good people.” Craig and Dane showed Jye how to set up the trailer, with its zip up doors, windows, large awning and myriad of accessories. It quickly became apparent just how comfortable and easy to manage the trailer would be. Much work goes on behind the scenes to convert wishes into realities. The Wish Services Team say they will do whatever is required, whether it be arranging itineraries, sourcing suppliers or liaising with celebrities and sporting stars. Dane Alling, from Johnno’s Camper Trailers in Wauchope, made it clear how much he has enjoyed his involvement. “We’re a company that values family and family life,” he said. “We would like to keep in touch with Jye and Ruth and will certainly be here to help if they need any further assistance.” Jye plans to hit the road in a few weeks and travel south to the Newcastle area with a few friends. Thanks to the generosity of Make-A-Wish and Johnno’s Camper Trailers, and unwavering support from Ruth, Jye will finally be able to achieve some independence. |
